Learning God

What are We to Do?

Be of Service

Introduction

God wants us to serve.  We are to serve God and serve others.  Jesus tells us when asked “36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Mat 22:36-40)

Jesus does not pick one of the 10 commandments.  He summarized all 10 of them into two, Love God and Love Others.  The term “love” is an action verb in the Greek, “agapaō“.It is not an emotional state.  It is an action.  To put this love into action is service to both God and others.

What does it mean to serve God and to serve others?  Here are some examples that we will explore, taken from the Word of God.

  1. Prayer.  This is one of the most powerful things we can do to serve both God and others.  This assumes, of course, that our prayers are in alignment with God’s will and not selfishly focused on our own desires.
  2. Giving/Tithing. (In development)
  3. Doing for others.  Jesus tells us to “love thy neighbors as thy self.”  This means we put others at least equal to ourselves.  If we follow Jesus’ example, we actually put others ahead of thyself and are willing to lay down our lives for the sake of others, even those who may not seem worthy of such love. That is what Jesus did for us.  He asks us to be willing to do that for others. (In development)
  4. Ministry. (In development)
  5. Evangelism. (In development)

Let’s take a look at each of these for a better understanding of what type of service God wants from us.
