Jewish Calendar

Background

The original calendar was given to humanity by God back in the time of Adam and Eve, which was first discussed in Genesis 7:11 (KJV), In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.”  It is assumed since Moses wrote the first 5 books of the Old Testament and he wrote them in Hebrew, the calendar system Moses was writing about was indeed the Jewish calendar.

Prior to the Exodus

The Jewish calendar at the time was known as the “Sacred Calendar”.  In this system there were 12 months of 29 or 30 days, starting with Abib and ending with Adar.  The name of the first month was changed to Nisan after the exile.

After the Exodus

God changed the order of months as a result of the Exodus. In Exodus 12:2 (KJV) it says, “This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.”  This is referred to as the “Civil calendar”.  See the table below for a listing of the months in order.
