Paul’s Explanation From the Book of Romans

What is Justification?

Next, let’s take a look at what it means to be “justified”.  The Greek word used for “justified” is dikaioō, which means ‘to render one as righteous, or as he ought to be’.  It is God seeing us as righteous.  We know from the previous section it is through faith that we are justified, but how does that make it, so God sees us as righteous, when we are not through our own action?  It is through faith that we accept that Jesus is God, was born as a human, died on the cross for our sins, was buried for 3 days and was resurrected and now sits at the right hand of the Father.  When we accept that, we become part of the “body of Christ” and the Holy Spirit begins to dwell in us.  As such, we take on the appearance of Christ, both spiritually and mentally, and eventually physically.  In so doing, God see Jesus Christ when He sees us!  We are one with Christ and take on His righteousness!

Justification is God’s way of separating us from the penalty of sin.  It is like being declared “not guilty” in a court of law.  It means we will not be punished for our sins, because Jesus Christ already has been punished for our sins in our place!  We become the body and eventually the bride of Christ and that makes us one with Him. His righteousness becomes our own.  It is all His doing, not ours. That is JUSTIFICATION!
